Wine Dinners at Dominique’s Bistro

Dominique’s returned to the downtown Houma restaurant scene a couple months ago after a year or so sabbatical to revamp the concept. The restaurant was reborn as an upscale lunch spot and wine bistro serving polished yet approachable food, but still moonlights as a fine dining establishment once a month in a series of wine dinners.

While sandwiches and salads dominate the menu by day, these special dinners pull out all the stops when it comes to ingredients, preparations, and especially the wine. Each course is paired with a glass thoughtfully selected by the chef herself. Before each serving, she explains the dish, its preparation, and why it goes so well with its corresponding wine.

Last month, we were treated to five excellent courses:

  • Stacked Shrimp and Tuna Salad
  • Pan Seared Mahi Mahi
  • Duck Confit
  • Roasted Beef Tenderloin
  • Sticky Toffee pudding

The Mahi Mahi was served atop a zucchini “pasta,” noodle-like slivers of squash that elevated the already excellent fish and tomato coulis to something playful and memorable.

Figs and candied bacon accompanied the duck. Dominique should bag that bacon and sell it as is, a decadent combination of sweet and savory with an incredible texture.

The wines complimented the food well. Having the chef there, explaining what to look for in the wine as we tasted made the dinner an experience beyond just gorging ourselves on great food and drink. It was a meal well worth the price ($75 covers tax and tip) as it would be difficult to find anything quite like it nearby.

Dominique plans to make this a monthly affair with July’s dinner scheduled for this Friday. The menu is set as follows:

  • Seared Scallops over a sweet pea puree topped with lemon marmalade
  • Waldorf Salad
  • Lemon-rosemary free-range Chicken with Grilled Peaches and Wild Rice
  • Braised Rabbit Pappardelle
  • Blackberry Dumplings with Homemade Brown Sugar Cream Cheese Ice Cream

The dinner is at 7:00 pm July 25th, but the reception begins at 6:30 where you can enjoy snacks and champagne. If you’d like to make a reservation, call 985-223-7540.
